Developing Software Engineering Leaders at Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley

Ray Bareiss is Director of Educational Programs and Professor of the Practice of Software Engineering and Software Management at Carnegie Mellon’s Silicon Valley Campus, where he oversees and teaches in two unique, learning-by-doing, professional master’s programs. He was a founder of Cognitive Arts Corporation and served as executive vice president for strategic projects, such as virtual university collaborations and large-scale corporate eLearning initiatives. Prior to joining Cognitive Arts, Dr. Bareiss was Assistant Director of the Institute for the Learning Sciences at Northwestern University, as well as an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Education. Dr. Bareiss specializes in pedagogy for professional education, computer-based learning environments, organizational memory and computer-based performance support, human-computer interaction, and cased-based reasoning. He is also the author of a number of books and articles. Dr. Bareiss holds a Ph.D. in Computer Sciences and a B.S. in Communication from the University of Texas at Austin.

     
 

The roles of tool and human mediators in Web-based course of self-regulation

Raija Latva-Karjanmaa
is the Coordinator of CICERO Learning, a multiscientific national research network. CICERO acts in the field of research on learning. Previously, from 2002-2006, she was the Coordinator of Life as Learning, the National Research Programme on learning at the Academy of Finland. Before that, in 2001-2003, she was the Programme Coordinator of IQ FORM at the Finnish Virtual University. During 2001-2003 she also worked as the Consortia Coordinator of Learningspace, a European Union cooperation project for national research programmes on learning. Ms Latva-Karjanmaa’s main research areas are learning psychology and educational sciences, her focus is on the role and quality of mediation in virtual learning environments. In addition Ms Latva-Karjanmaa is co-coordinating the ICT in schools’ everyday life –project which is a national project funded by the Ministry of Transport and Communications. This research and development network involves 8 universities and 23 software companies and publishing houses.
Co-ordinator Raija Latva-Karjanmaa is in charge of new project and external funding development in CICERO and international co-operation together with the Board of Directors - especially in ICT and education. CICERO’s project portfolio is the size of 5 Meur (5,8 M. Dollars).The most important international co-operation partners in this context are the universities such as University of California Santa Barbara, USA, University of Cambridge, UK, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, University of Leuven, Belgium, University of Queensland, Australia, University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia, University of Tubingen, Germany, University of Warwick, UK Utrecht University, Netherlands and Waseda University, Japan.
Ms Latva-Karjanmaa has been frequently invited to act as an expert or external evaluator in European Commission, Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Transport and Communications R & D projects especially in the field of ICT and learning research. She has worked as an External Expert for the Ministry of Education in 2000-2004 and as an Expert for designing new research programmes for the Academy of Finland (Life as Learning 2000-2002, and Business Programme 2004).
Ms Latva-Karjanmaa has acted as the National Information Officer in Finland for NSF of USA, Research and Innovation Liaison Manager for EAIE (European Association of International Education), Research Liaison Officer of Helsinki University of Technology 1999-2000, Senior Planning Officer, European Affairs, Helsinki University of Technology, 1994-1997. She was an invited researcher for Open and Distance Learning in the European Union ERASMUS programme. In 1990-1993 she designed the International Apprenticeship Programme for Nokia Group and ABB Industry.

     
 

On the improvement of skill evaluation in the education of IS engineers

Yasuko Kaminuma
has retired from the professor of Maebashi Institute of Technology in 2003. Since then, she has done the part-time lecturer on CS and IS in some universities. She is related to the engineer training in various enterprises, and writes many textbooks on the information systems, etc. She has received the fellow of Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ). As an activity of IPSJ, chairmen of information systems education board, chairmen of the advanced IS engineer training support organization, commissioner of accreditation committee, chief of the information systems workshop, etc. have been held successively. In the activity of these, it is mainly related to curriculum decision of J07-IS and rearing of the IS engineer. In addition, directors in the Information Systems Society of Japan (ISSJ), ISSJ journals editing chairman, etc. have been held successively. In the society activity, there are IT skill standard revision committee commissioner of the IPA, WG members of the industry-university cooperation PBL project of METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), vice president of the P-SEC (Practical Software Education Consortium), etc. Dr. Yasuko Kaninuma holds a Ph.D. in Information systems.
