Bionics program / Water Environment and Treatment Technologies

Research content
This laboratory on water environment is actively conducting research on water and wastewater treatment technologies, analytical chemistry for water quality analysis, and environmental microbiology. The application of membrane bioreactors to the treatment of industrial wastewater of different characteristics has been investigated targeting chemically and biologically high-quality treated water. The spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in the water environment is another main topic of this laboratory because antimicrobial resistance in the bacterial community is recognized as a worldwide health threat by the development of the resistances to each new antimicrobial agent. The field monitoring results on the resistance to relatively new antibiotics such as fluoroquinolones and third-generation cephalosporins were carefully compared with the information on clinical isolates from hospitals. We are also actively working on analytical chemistry applied for water quality analysis. Odorous compounds and microplastics are the targets of the analysis with a special focus on unintentional sources of these materials in urban water systems. The research works in this laboratory are frequently published in international journals and introduced by mass media. Many graduates from this laboratory found their permanent jobs in the water and wastewater industries and in water and environmental consultancy services.
